Zodiac signs and constellations: two different sky maps

Why a tropical sign and an astronomical constellation can have different names.

Dear Reader,

Have you heard someone say that your zodiac sign has changed because the Sun is now in a different constellation? Or wondered why your horoscope names one sign while an astronomy chart shows another?

The reason is that zodiac signs and constellations are two different ways of mapping the sky. This article explains the difference and tells you which map Horoscope Hermit uses.

In Western tropical astrology, the zodiac is divided into twelve equal signs. Each sign covers 30 degrees along the Sun’s apparent path through the sky. The starting point is linked to the March equinox, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving north. Aries begins at this point, followed by eleven more equal sections.

Astronomical constellations are not equal sections. They are areas of the sky, and some are much larger than others. The Sun’s apparent path passes through thirteen constellations, including Ophiuchus. So a tropical sign named Scorpio does not mean the Sun must be inside the astronomical constellation Scorpius.

Think of two maps of the same place. One divides the land into twelve equal areas. The other follows natural boundaries such as rivers and mountains. The maps use different rules, so their borders do not line up. Neither map has to be wrong; they are showing the same place in different ways.

The names of the tropical signs came from ancient star patterns. Over a long time, Earth’s slow wobble changes how the equinox points line up with the background stars. This is another reason the tropical signs and present-day constellations do not match.

Horoscope Hermit uses the Western tropical zodiac for its general horoscopes. When we talk about astronomical constellations, we will name them as constellations. Keeping the two maps clear helps you understand what a horoscope is referring to.

The next time someone says your sign has changed, ask which map they're using. A tropical horoscope keeps its twelve equal signs. An astronomy chart shows the constellations. Knowing that difference helps you understand why the two can give you different names.
